The seminar which held at the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis Gym and conducted by Cuban Coach, Francisco Hernandez Roldan and GBA’s Technical Director, Terrence Poole, dealt with some changes of the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) rules as well as new coaching and boxing techniques.
“We covered some of the new AIBA rules including the new 10-point must system,” Poole told Stabroek Sport following the completion of the seminar.
“AIBA is not using the computer system anymore, they are using the points system like in the professional ranks. The command of the referee also changes, instead of the third man in the ring giving three commands he will give four, it was stop, box and break now it is stop, box, break and time out,” Poole added.
“The corner is now entitled to three seconds instead of two; the corner will also be able to use Vaseline which was previously prohibited,” he explained.
Why the new changes?
“Because of the transition from the amateur into the professional league you will find these changes occurring so we are hosting these seminars to keep our coaches abreast,” Poole explained.
The GBA’s TD also pointed out that the ‘Referee Stops the Contest’ (RSC) will now be classified as a Technical Knockout (TKO).
“Other aspects that were covered were some fundamentals like attack, defence and counter attack, how you train a nine-year-old to a 12-year- old as they graduate to 13 to 15 the type of work load you will carry them through and so on”.
Poole declared that the seminar was very interactive and he was satisfied with the feedback.
He also told this publication that the scheduled two-day seminars will continue on August 10 and 11 and conclude on September 7 and 8.
“This weekend we have our DDL under 16 tournament of which will be followed by the National Open on August 23-24,” Poole informed.
