Last Thursday when the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTYSC) in conjunction with Sentinel Security Limited hosted the inaugural Gregory Gaskin Memorial/Berbice Sports Award ceremony at the St. Francis Training Centre, Berbice.
The ceremony was held in order to recognize and honour outstanding sports performances by persons from the ancient county.
Carol Humphrey won the Sportswoman-of-the-Year prize; the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) received the Sport Organisation-of-the-Year award while veteran football organiser Neil Humphrey won the Sports Personality-of-the-year award.
RHTYSC Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster hailed the award ceremony as historic and praised Noreen Gaskin and Sentinel Security for their sponsorship, while noting that Berbicians now have their own sports awards scheme.
He expressed the hope that it would inspire all sports persons to greater achievements.
The awardees were chosen by a panel of judges headed by veteran DTV-8 News Editor and sports administer Gregory Rambarran. Foster expressed gratitude to every sports organisation who submitted nominations.
President of the RHTYSC Keith Foster and patron Beverley Harper, both praised the awardees and urged them to upkeep their high standards and to remain positive role models to the younger generation.
Sentinel Security Limited representative Dexter Todd expressed gratitude to the RHTYSC for allowing Noreen Gaskin the opportunity to honour her husband in a special way as he was a strong believer in youth and sports development.
Todd stated that the Gregory Gaskin Memorial/Berbice Sports Award would continue in the future and expressed confidence that it would develop into Guyana’s premier sports award.
The late Gregory Gaskin was passionate about sports especially motor racing and his widow said that she was pleased to honour his memory by rewarding outstanding sports personalities in the ancient county.
Permaul made his ODI and test debut for the West Indies in 2012 and also captained Berbice, Guyana and the West Indies “A” teams. Carol Humphrey dominated female lawn tennis in Berbice and Guyana during 2012 winning several tournaments while her older sibling Neil, was honoured for his unselfish contribution to the development of football in Berbice especially at the junior level.
The BCB was honoured for a remarkable year during which it has hosted over 20 cricket tournaments and a record breaking 175 programmes/activities.
All the awardees received a medal, a plaque, a trophy and a collection of gifts.
The awardees all expressed gratitude to the RHTYSC and Sentinel Security Limited for hosting the awards ceremony and pledged to always strive for excellence.
