Demerara skipper June Ogle struck a vital half-century against Essequibo Combined to help her team to a 35-run win as the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) senior female Inter-County limited overs tournament commenced yesterday at the Everest Cricket Club Ground.
The match was reduced to 20 overs-a-side due to showers yesterday and Demerara, who won the toss, opted to take first crack chalking up 123 for the loss of two wickets from their 20 overs.
Ogle struck two boundaries in her 67-ball 52 and received support from Latoya Smith who made 39.
The two ladies picked apart the opposition bowling acquiring consistent singles and two’s, along with the occasional boundary as they added 123 runs for the fourth wicket.
Essequibo Combined skipper Kumarie Persaud was the successful bowler claiming both wickets for just 27 runs off her four overs.
In reply, Essequibo Combined ended on 88 for 5 from their 20 overs. After a slow start, the Essequibo Combined team was kept in the game by opener Abeena Parker who led from the front with a well-played 41. She received support from Mathena Cambridge who chipped in with 19 following the dismissals of Tracey Glasgow (0) and skipper Persaud (4).
Monique Benn was not out on 3 and Amrita Mohabir yet to register a run at the end.
Akeze Thompson ended with 2 for 14 off four overs while Haseena Mohamed chipped in with 2 for 12 and Jannette Daniels grabbed one wicket for 14 runs.
The tournament continues to at the same venue today when Essequibo will seek to rebound with a win against Berbice.
The action bowls off at 9:00hrs weather permitting.
