Still leading!

At the end of the third day of the Guyana Police Force’s Inter Division track and field championships at the Police Sports Club ground, Eve Leary, ‘A’ Division was still in the lead with 214 points, 11 points ahead of defending champions, Headquarters who are on 203 points with

Country Division third on 62 points and ‘B’ Division fourth with 58 points.

The championships will take a break today but will culminate tomorrow under floodlights at the same venue.

Yesterday’s 800m final proved to be the hottest race of the day and ended with a win for Kevin Bayley who clocked 1:58s to edge Jowyne Johnson in a driving finish.

Bayley led from the beginning but was eventually challenged by Johnson on the final lap. Johnson duly passed Bayley in the final 200m and opened a 10m gap but faded in the final 50m after shifting gears from the 100m mark and was pipped on the line.

The women’s 800m final was not steamy as the men’s as Janelle Jonas took the race in a comfortable 2:36 seconds ahead of Tracy Moses and Shion Boyer, all of ‘A’ Division.

National track and field schools champion athlete, Melissa Byass won the Youth Club girls 800m in 2:42 seconds ahead of Tabitha Bowman (2:59 seconds) and Roxanne Gill who clocked three minutes flat.

The Youth Club boys 800m saw Rondel Austin clocking 2:09 seconds ahead of Denzil Leitch and Marvin Tinnis who clocked 2:13 seconds and 2:25 seconds respectively.

Headquarters’ Nathaniel Giddings ran an outstanding race to win his first event at the championship when he defeated Dennis Horatio in the men’s 5000m final with a time of 17:08 seconds. Horatio, who was close behind, clocked 17:09 seconds while Larry Josiah of ‘A’ Division finished third in 18:19 seconds.

Troy Williams rebounded from his defeat in the men’s long jump on Tuesday by winning the triple jump with a leap of 13.23m ahead of Yoel Benjamin 12.36m and Clarence Greene 12.30m.Cindy Fraser was `outpunched’ by sprinter, Tenisha Punch in the women’s triple jump as Punch bounded to 9.32m to surpass the 9.29m best leap by Fraser. Lashawna Benjamin leapt 7.90m for third place.

Cordell English threw the javelin to a distance of 43.57m to take the number one spot ahead of Keshon Shepherd and Colwin Leacock who threw 41.28m and 39.71m respectively.

The women’s javelin was won by national record holder, Natasha Alder whose throw of 33.56m saw her taking the top spot ahead of Latoya Rodney and Stacey Wilson who had best measurements of 29.39m and 28.46m respectively.

The Youth Club girls 200m final saw sprint ace, Tiffany Carto in first position in 27.5 seconds with Juanita Hooper and Whitney Hooper behind in 28.9 seconds and 31.5 seconds respectively.

Kevin Abbensetts won the boys 200m final in 23.6 seconds ahead of Samuel Dorris who clocked 23.8 seconds and Kevin Scott who was third in 24.1 seconds.
