Works Minister Robeson Benn says that a pre-feasibility study for a new Demerara Harbour Bridge has been conducted and is currently being looked at by government.
Talk about the possibility of a new bridge has been going on for more than a decade in recognition that the lifespan of the floating bridge is coming to an end but this is the first tangible step that has been made.
Speaking to Stabroek News, the minister said, “It (the pre-feasibility study) was completed and given to us since last week.” He added that scrutinising the document would take about a month.
When asked about funding for the bridge, Benn said that funding has not yet been looked at, because they are only at the stage of a pre-feasibility study. The bridge has been in operation since 1978.
