A truck driver was fined $7,500 yesterday, after admitting to driving under the influence of alcohol.
Sajid Rohaman, charged with his first offence, promised Magistrate Rhondel Weaver at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court that he would not drink and drive on another occasion.
After Rohaman’s guilty plea, Magistrate Weaver educated the driver of the penalties he would face on the next occasion. He was then fined $7,500 fined with an alternative of 12 weeks imprisonment.
Police said that on Wednesday, on the No.19 Public Road, East Coast Berbice, Rohaman was driving motor lorry GMM 6921 while his breath alcohol content exceed the prescribed limit of 34 microgrammes. At the time of the offence, the accused had 104 microgrammes of alcohol in his body.
It was also stated that during that time, Rohaman was swerving from left to right on the public road, in a manner dangerous to the public. As a result, he was stopped and arrested and taken to the Central Police Station, where a breathalyser test was carried out on him.
A second man was also due to answer a similar charge but did not turn up at the court.
It is alleged that Deoram Persaud had 54 microgrammes of alcohol in his system while driving motor lorry GLL 7760. He was also arrested and told to appear in court yesterday but did not. As a result of his non-appearance, an arrest warrant was issued for him.
