A nine-second knockout of Young Achiever’s Anthony Miguel at the hands of Pocket Rocket Boxing Gym’s Keon Williams highlighted day one of the Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) two-day under-16 tournament yesterday at the Andrew ‘Six Head’ Lewis Gym.
The competition got off to a cracker in the form of a right hand which collided to the chin of Miguel and ended the brief affair just nine ticks after the first bell of the scheduled three-round 115lbs-119lbs bout.
John Moore (Forgotten Youth Foundation) and Roy Samuels (Harpy Eagles) however, gave the fans what they came to see, a punch-filled encounter which left patrons tongues wagging at the conclusion of the card.
Moore, however, pulled out a close decision on the judges’ score cards in the 80lbs-84lbs super fight.
Jaime Kellman, Moses Oxford, Orwane Harris, Shemar Bumbury, Kevon Mullings, Deshon Allicock and Akiel Mounter were also in the winner’s row.
The tournament was officially declared open by Presidential Advisor on Empowerment and boxing promoter Odinga Lumumba. In his brief remarks, Lumumba encouraged the young pugilists to strive for excellence and focus on being future Olympic medalists and world champions.
Action continues today at 10:00hrs at the same venue. Twelve bouts are on the card.
