Hikers U23 (+5) held off Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) (+1) by a 7-5 margin in their gritty men’s ‘A’ division matchup as action in the Goals Galore Indoor Hockey Tournament continued at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue on Friday.
Patrick Edghill opened the scoring for the Bourda side through an eight minute conversion but Hikers U23 would restore their four goal advantage compliments of a Micheal Harding 19th minute effort to the lower left hand corner from a penalty corner.
GCC would strike upon the resumption of the second period from a Kevin Spencer 20th minute effort.
Cutting in from the right flank, Spencer evaded his marker before unleashing a powerful shot to the top left hand corner of the goal.
Orland Semple cut the deficit to two goals with a 26th minute strike.
Receiving a pass from Shad Fernandes from the right side of the field, Semple wrong footed the Hikers U23 goalkeeper as he placed his first time strike from the center of the arc into the bottom right hand corner of the goal.
The Bourda side would pull within one goal of leveling the match as Spencer completed his double in the 29th minute from a left sided strike.
Desperately trying not to concede further, Hikers U23 would seal the hard-fought win through a Joel Hunte 40th minute conversion from the left side of the field.
In the Ladies division, GCC Tigers (+0) led by a seven-goal haul from Sonia Jardine in the first, seventh, 10th, 12th, 28th, 37th and 40th minutes, overcame Hikers Revelations (+8) by a 12-10 score line.
Ulrica Sutherland netted a hat trick in the sixth, 38th and 39th minutes while Gabriella Xavier picked up a brace in the 18th and 29th minutes for the victors.
On target for Hikers Revelations were Charlyn Elliot and Romichelle Brummell in the 10th and 19th minutes respectively.
Ol Skool (+6) through second half goals by Phillip Fernandes, Alan Fernandes and Ivor Thompson in the 21st, 27th and 40th minutes defeated Hikers Generals (+0) 9-6 in their Men ‘A’ fixture.
Shane Samuels led the line for the Generals with a helmet trick in the 19th, 23rd, 28th and 30th minutes while Devin Munroe and Robert France netted solo strikes in the 17th and 39th minutes correspondingly.
In the Men ‘B’ division, Old Fort (+1) defeated GCC (+0) 4-2. Stefan King, Stephen Spostra and Richard Thomas netted for the victors in the 13th, 19th and 25th minutes respectively.
Scoring for GCC was Meshach Sergeant and Keon McKenzie in the 10th and 30th minutes correspondingly.
A hat trick on either side of half time by dynamic forward Aroydy Branford in the 18th, 21st and 27th minutes piloted Hikers U19 (+3) to a hard fought 8-7 victory over Old Fort (+3).
Jamarj Assanah and Antonio Pemberton recorded goals in the 26th and 33rd minutes respectively for the young Hikers unit.
Dwight Sullivan recorded a brace in the 14th and 31st minutes in a losing cause whilst John Abrams and Jason DeSantos completed the score line with goals in the 24th and 30th minutes correspondingly.
