Former President Bharrat Jagdeo has been nominated for membership of the Central Committee at the 30th PPP Congress which will be held this weekend. Jagdeo is presently a Central Committee member. It would be the first time in 14 years he has been nominated while not holding the presidency.
A party insider told Stabroek News that while Jagdeo is most likely to be nominated once again he will himself have to decide whether to accept the nomination and vie for a position during the Congress, which is being held from August 1-3 in Port Mourant.
The party insider noted that while his nomination opens up the possibility for the former President to be considered for party posts including that of General Secretary, it will most likely not be the outcome. Stabroek News was made to understand that it is most likely that that current General Secretary, President Donald Ramotar will once again be elected meaning that the party will opt to maintain the status quo. Following the death of President Cheddi Jagan, the PPP/C had decided to split the positions. Ramotar held the position of General Secretary while the presidency was held by Sam Hinds, Janet Jagan and Jagdeo.
Analysts have said that Jagdeo’s possible central committee nomination meant that he could once again hold a top position in the PPP/C. This was dismissed by a party insider who noted that the former President has stated in the past that he would not be accepting a nomination nor did he have any desire to become the General Secretary of the party.
National Congress Committee Chairman, Clement Rohee had stated during the PPP/C’s weekly press conference on Monday that this was to be the largest Congress in the party’s history and will be inclusive of various Diaspora groups who will also be attending. According to insiders both the current president and the former have high rankings and their names have been appeared on numerous nominations.
