The Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) officer, for whom the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) had asked the public for assistance in locating, yesterday afternoon turned himself in as investigations continued into the cocaine find at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri on Saturday.
Head of CANU, James Singh, confirmed that Anthony Thomas turned himself in yesterday afternoon. Thomas joins a customs officer
and two other men from a security firm and a baggage handling firm at the airport in custody.
Ten parcels amounting to 11 kilos of cocaine was found in a bag in the baggage area. Singh had told this newspaper that the bag was bound for New York. A plane was being prepared for departure from the Cheddi Jagan International Airport for JFK International Airport in New York when the discovery was made.
Singh had explained that it was during routine checks that CANU investigators realised there was false information on the bag and that it did not belong to any of the travelling passengers.
Yesterday, persons who know Thomas expressed surprise that a bulletin was issued for him, stating that the man worked diligently at the airport and described him as a no-nonsense person. They said that the fact that he turned himself in to the authorities proved that he had nothing to hide.
