First Infantry Battalion on Tuesday morning ran away with the inaugural Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Inter-Unit road race title winning at the expense of Base Camp Ayanganna and 31 Special Forces Squadron respectively.
The race which featured 6 athletes,
four males and two females on each team, commenced at 5:30 hrs in front of the Camp Ayanganna, Vlissingen Road entrance and proceeded along the East Coast railway embankment to University of Guyana before returning at the starting point for conclusion.
Spearheading the winning team were Inter-Guiana Games (IGG) medallist, Tyshon Bentinck and national schools track and field championships medallist Carlisa Atkinson. Also gracing the team were Donnica Lyle, Trevon King and Oakley McDonald.
Coach of the GDF Athletics Club, Robert Chisholm said that no official time was released.
Meanwhile, Tyrone Smith in a brief interview with Stabroek Sport, said that preparation of the track for the staging of army’s annual track and field championships is undergoing after a delay because of the inclement weather.
The track and field events are billed for sometime next week.
