Taxi driver Dwayne George grabbed a woman’s handbag and drove off with it, according to police.
But George denied the charge when it was read against him yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and he was granted $100,000 bail.
The bag, valued $4000, belonged to Carol Barry and contained $50,000 cash, her Republic Bank ATM card, her ID card, her passport and other documents, and a charger.
Prosecutor Bharat Mangru told Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, that the bag was allegedly stolen from Barry’s person on July 30, when she was proceeding along Pike Street.
George was driving a yellow Raum motor car, HB 9036, when he snatched the handbag, Mangru said.
However, George Thomas, counsel for the accused, contended that his client could not have been the actual perpetrator as three of his car windows are impaired so he could not have snatched the bag. This, he told the Chief Magistrate, would have been discovered had the investigating rank done a thorough enough job to verify George’s story.
Mangru noted that George and Barry have known each other for years and as such he may tamper with her if bail is granted. He said too that there is a likelihood George may not return to court.
The prosecutor noted that the offence alleged is a serious one that carries a serious penalty and in the circumstances bail should not be granted.
Overruling the objection, the magistrate granted bail in the sum of $100, 000. The matter is set to continue on September 8 for filing of statements.
