Today we bring you a visual ‘World beyond…’ The photographs are from Hosororo and Kumaka and were taken by Duncan Saul.
Hosororo is located in the Barima-Waini region of the North-West and falls within the Mabaruma sub-region of Region One.
Abounding in lush vegetation and blessed with bountiful fruit trees, Hosororo is set on a hill, and many of the homes are built on the side of the hill with a commanding view of the environs. It is altogether a very placid and peaceful place.
The village has traditionally been home to the Arawaks and also some Waraus , but its proximity to the larger, ethnically mixed communities of Mabaruma and Kumaka has caused members of other groups as well to filter in to Hosororo.
As has traditionally been the case, farming is still the main occupation of the members of the community. Hosororo, SN was told, is known for its fertile soils and is the earliest known Amerindian site for the cultivation of cassava in Guyana.
