Simone Benjamin, who admitted to throwing a liquid on a Guyana Power and Light Inc (GPL) security guard after a row at the company’s Main Street office, was yesterday spared sentencing after she agreed to compensate the victim.
Benjamin, 39, pleaded guilty to assault and abusive language charges when she appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman.
The charges read at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court stated that on July 15, Benjamin, a mother of five, assaulted and used abusive language towards Alana Glasgow at Main Street, Georgetown.
Prosecutor Vishnu Hunt stated that Benjamin went to GPL and after a verbal confrontation she threw a liquid on Glasgow. The police were contacted and Benjamin was subsequently arrested and charged.
A very remorseful Benjamin pleaded for forgiveness and suggested that she would pay for any damage to Glasgow’s clothing.
Glasgow subsequently agreed to be paid back and when asked by Magistrate Latchman, what was the cost of the damage to her clothing, she stated that the cost was $15,000.
When Magistrate Latchman inquired whether Benjamin had that amount of money in her possession, she indicated that she did and the payment of $15,000 was immediately made to Glasgow and the matter was dismissed.
