President of the Pepsi Sonics basketball club Merle Chalmers says there has been an overwhelming response to the annual Pepsi Sonics Basketball Club’s boys and girls’ summer camp.
“It’s been an overwhelming turn out. We started with 42 persons now we have over 53 persons from both primary and secondary schools. Surprisingly we got about 20 girls within the camp. They have been progressing smoothly and are very receptive to the training” added Chalmers.
The camp is being staged at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue every Monday to Friday from 10:00am to 12:00pm and will conclude on August 11.
Chalmers who is president of the Mandela-based unit stated that annually the club hosts a fundamental and remedial basketball clinic for boys and girls as a way of giving back to the community while helping to broaden the scope of the disciple.
“The camp is being used to import knowledge and work on their deficiencies in the sport. We will also be conducting English and Mathematics classes while also giving them assignments to complete,” said Chalmers.
According to the former national player, more camps of a similar nature are needed as they provide an opportunity and avenue for children to showcase their talents.
“I encourage people to get on board. It’s a very good program as they have a lot of youths come from impoverished communities and need the help,” said Chalmers.
Sponsors of the event are Automotive Essentials, 4RBearings, Bacchus Drug Store, Guyana Bearings, Ramroop Furniture Store, Giftland Office Max and Antarctic Air-conditioning.
