A taxi driver was remanded to prison yesterday on a charge that he was found with ammunition in his vehicle during a police search.
Romaine Moses, 26, appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on a charge that he had two live 9mm rounds in his possession without licence, on August 2 at First Avenue, Bartica.
Moses, of 82 Victoria Road, Plaisance, pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him.
Prosecutor Vishnu Hunt said that police were on patrol duty when they stopped Moses and searched his vehicle and found the ammunition.
According to Hunt, the items were found concealed in a black haversack.
Moses was subsequently arrested and charged.
Attorney Dexter Todd, who represented Moses, said that his client knows absolutely nothing about the charge levelled against him. According to him, a passenger had left the haversack in his client’s car and he was keeping it to be returned to that person. Todd said that his client had no knowledge of what was in the bag.
He made an application for his client to be admitted to reasonable bail, noting that he had no antecedents, posed no risk of flight and had a fixed place of abode.
Hunt, however, objected to bail, arguing that no special reasons were advanced. As a result, Moses was remanded to prison.
The case will be called again on September 1.
