Twenty-one deportees arrived at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri yesterday afternoon under heavy security after serving prison sentences in US jails.
A source at the airport confirmed that a private plane with the deportees touched down around 15:30 hours. It was noted that there were a lot more than 21 names on the manifest, an indication, that there might have been a lot of security personnel on board.
The source said that this is the first time a plane with only deportees has arrived here from the US. It was noted that the deportees are usually transported in small numbers – one or sometimes two – on commercial flights. They are escorted by a security official, the source said.
Stabroek News understands that after clearing immigration, the 21 deportees were transported to the city where they were processed by the police. It is unclear what happened thereafter.
Efforts to make contact with acting police commissioner Leroy Brumell for a comment were futile.
