BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, CMC- Tagenarine Chanderpaul compiled an unbeaten century to put Guyana on course to securing an outright victory over Leeward Islands at stumps on the second day of their three-day fifth round match in the Regional Under 19 competition yesterday.
Chanderpaul reached 104 not out when Guyana, who resumed from their overnight 152 for five, declared on 344 for 8 on the stroke of tea, a lead of 216 at Conaree.
His stay at the crease was 431 minutes, facing 317 balls and he partnered with Romario Shepherd to grind the Leeward Islands into the dust with an unbeaten stand of 130.
In their second turn at the crease, the Leewards were in all sorts of trouble early on at 14 for the loss of three wickets and ended the day on 67 for three with Saeed Williams and Avier Christian battling back.
Williams is unbeaten on 36 and Christian 16.
The Leewards still trail Guyana’s first innings score by 149 runs.
Meantime at Warner Park, the Windwards are on top and heading for victory against Trinidad and Tobago.
Keon George was the hero of the Windwards batting taking them to 152 for two at lunch after they lost two early wickets.
George batted sensibly throughout the morning to extend their lead and found a reliable partner in Taryck Gabriel, who was with him on 32 as both batsmen put on an unbroken stand of 69.
George’s half century came up in 51 minutes, facing 108 balls and spanking seven fours along the way.
The T&T bowlers engineered a collapse after Lunch, getting Gabriel early for 43. Wickets kept tumbling thereafter as the Windwards fell to 171 for 6.
At Tea, the Windwards had set Trinidad & Tobago 245 runs for victory.
T&T slumped to 78 for three and ended the day in trouble on 93 for four still needing 152 runs for victory.
At EGSC Molineaux, Barbados struck back with the ball but still face a grim task to avoid defeat against Jamaica.
Neil Persaud grabbed three for 33 as the Jamaicans were bowled out for 188, a lead of 89 runs.
At one stage the Jamaicans slipped from 100 for three to 122 for five wickets.
Barbados ran into early trouble in their second innings tumbling to 35 for two to 58 for four, still trailing Jamaica’s first innings score by 35 runs.
