Seven teams will compete in the Banks Malta Supreme Under-13 cricket competition organized by the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) and sponsored by Banks DIH Limited schedule to commence next weekend.
The tournament was launched Friday at Banks DIH Sports Club with Vice President of the GCA Neil Barry highlighting the need for more developmental competitions for junior players in Georgetown.
He said the tournament was timely and he thanked Banks DIH for its sponsorship as six Clubs affiliated to the GCA battle for top honours. Defending champions Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) will be fielding two teams while the other clubs – Georgetown Cricket Club, Everest Cricket Club, Transport Sports Club, Gandhi Youth Organisation and Malteenoes Sports Club will be fielding one each.
Barry added that Food for the Poor Inc. will be providing balls for the competition and he thanked the organization for their support.
Banks DIH Communications Manager Troy Peters said that his company was delighted to be sponsoring the tournament for a second time.
He said that the tournament was critical to the development of cricket in Georgetown and by extension Guyana.
“We have already seen the benefits in view of the fact that several players have gone on represent the national under-15 team. We see this tournament as a developmental one and we would like to applaud the GCA for this initiative,” he declared.
Peters urged the players to make full use of the exposure and indicated that they have the full support of Banks DIH.
GCA Competitions Chairman Shawn Massiah said the tournament will run for two weeks and will be completed before the new school year opens – weather permitting giving the players much needed competition during the school holiday.
Massiah said that the tournament format is 20 overs per side and three matches will be competed daily at three venues in Thomas Lands – GNIC, GYO and MYO grounds while the final will be played at Thirst Park ground.
