Fascinating orchids

Oncidium orchids are native to the Caribbean, South and Central America and Florida.  There are approximately 600 species in this genus and it is commonly called ‘Dancing lady.’  Many species have been cross-bred forming an Oncidium alliance and new hybrids.

Oncidium have flat pseudobulbs with long thin leaves while in the Caribbean and Guyana we have the ‘Mule ear’ variety ‒ Oncidium lanceanum with small pseudobulbs and very large thick succulent leaves resembling ‘Mule ears.’ This variety can grow on a tree or in a shade house, in a hanging basket  in a medium of charcoals, small rocks, perlite or tree bark. It likes bright light but not direct sunlight. Oncidium lanceanum has spotted foilage and many colourful flowers. The petals are brown on gold with a rosy pink lip, and the flower has fragrance.

One famous hybrid is Onc Sharry Baby ‘Sweet Fragrance’ which has a deep maroon colouring and a white lip with a strong scent.  This is a collector’s must!
Until next week, happy gardening!
