MOSCOW, Russia, CMC – Another Caribbean athlete has tested positive for a banned substance and will not participate in the 14th IAAF World Championships in Athletics underway here in Moscow.
The Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations (BAAA) has confirmed that sprinter Trevorvano Mackey, who was scheduled to compete in the 200 metres, has returned a positive doping test.
The alleged positive test stemmed from the Bahamas National Track and Field Championships in June, according to published reports.
BAAA President Mike Sands was quoted by the Nassau Guardian as being disappointed “but as a country they are prepared to move on and not let it damper the spirits of Team Bahamas.”
Sands didn’t outline the details of the unfortunate occurrence, but said that it is something that the BAAA is truly disturbed about. He admitted that they received an adverse report from the Bahamas Anti-Doping Commission (BADC) but reserved further comment until an official investigation takes place.
Mackey reportedly said that he was totally unaware of the substance that he consumed and is deeply saddened.
This is the latest in a string of positive tests for the Caribbean in athletics for the year including seven-time Olympic medallist Veronica Campbell-Brown and former world 100m record holder Asafa Powell of Jamaica.
World 100m bronze medallist Kelly-Ann Baptiste of Trinidad and Tobago also failed a drug test and it has been reported that Aaron Armstrong, also of Trinidad & Tobago, missed two mandatory tests.
