Two men have been arrested in connection with Monday’s discovery of cocaine in a shipment of ochroes at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timheri, police said yesterday.
In a press release, police said that ranks of the Police Narcotics Branch intercepted 15 kilograms 55 grams of cocaine at the airport.
It was noted that the narcotics were found stuffed in ochroes among a shipment of vegetables that was in a cargo bond.
Repeated efforts during the day yesterday to reach acting police commissioner Leroy Brumell and the acting Crime Chief Winston Cosbert were futile.
This newspaper has since learnt that ranks may be looking in the direction of Linden where they are hoping to pick up some information about the major players involved. Stabroek News understands that the shipper is one of those detained for questioning.
A source had told this newspaper on Monday that CANU and police ranks were checking a shipment of vegetables when an alert police rank found the cocaine.
The drugs were found only in ochroes.
Other vegetables were in the shipment which was scheduled to leave the country for the United States. Reports are that the inside of each ochro was scooped out and the cocaine stuffed inside.
The ochroes were then sealed and packed into boxes.
