Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony stated that the Guyana Squash Association (GSA) must be applauded for its efforts in hosting the Digicel 2013 Senior Caribbean Squash Championships.
Delivering the feature address at the event’s official opening ceremony at the Georgetown Club, Anthony said: “Congratulations to the GSA for putting together and running a wonderful tournament. While squash is a relatively expensive sport, many old players are donating their old rackets to newer players. We also need to continue to expand and develop the sport and to all the players please enjoy your stay with us.”
President of the GSA David Fernandes noted:“It’s been an amazing effort by the players on the field. We have seen great squash so far in the tournament and looking forward towards great squash for the remainder of th
e week. Thanks must be extended to the Government, Digicel, Banks DIH Limited, Ansa McAl and all other sponsors who made this tournament a success.” Gregory Dean, Chief Executive Officer of title sponsors Digicel during a brief comment stated that his company was quite happy to be the title sponsors of the competition and wished all the players a wonderful tournament.
Attorney-at-Law Ronald Burch-Smith during a short comment thanked the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and the respective sponsors for supporting the event stating that without them it would not have been a success. The individual round of the tournament concluded on Tuesday with Nicolette Fernandes and Chris Binnie of Jamaica both retaining their respective singles crowns while the team playoff round officially commenced yesterday.
