Maurice Amres, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GEB Security Services Inc., says that Guyanese need to become more responsible in their approach to fire safety.
Addressing a security seminar organised by the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry
(GCCI) and the Guyana Association of Private Security Organisations (GAPSO) at the Pegasus Hotel on Tuesday, Amres lamented that a vast number of the fires which occurred could have been prevented, and added that much of the resources which are “wasted” by the Guyana Relief Council to assist victims of fires could have been used on more serious instances.
According to Amres, as of July 31, the Guyana Fire Service had received approximately 1500 calls about fires. Of this number, however, about 200 were reports of buildings that were on fire and Amres revealed that 10% of these instances resulted from arson. Persons, he said, burnt buildings for several reasons, including the collection of insurance benefits.
