The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) has said it looks forward to President Donald Ramotar’s assent to the recently passed local government bills that will pave the way for the delivery of urgently needed local government elections.
It has also said it eagerly awaits the authorisation of the Guyana Elections Commission to begin preparations for the hosting of the polls.
A release from the chamber issued last week said that the passage of the Local Government Commission Bill, the Local Government (Amendment) Bill, the Municipal and District Councils (Amendment) Bill, the Fiscal Transfers Bill, and the Hydro-Electric Power (Amendment) Bill stood as a demonstration of political maturity and leadership and what parliamentary policy makers can achieve if dialogue, disclosure, and compromise form the foundation of their engagements. The chamber described the end results as a win-win situation for all Guyana and its development.
The release said that the GCCI supports initiatives that are aimed towards reducing barriers to Guyana’s competitiveness and noted that it has identified ensuring political and economic stability, enacting local government reform and administering elections as major prerequisites for improving the country’s international competitiveness.
Hence, the chamber’s unequivocal support for the passage of the bills.
