Winston George, who represented Guyana in the 400m event at last year’s Olympic Games in London yesterday failed to advance beyond the first round of the 200m heats of the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) World Championship in Moscow, Russia.
George joined the two other Guyanese at the Championship, Kadecia Baird and Adam Harris, both US-based athletes, in not getting past the preliminary rounds of their respective events. Baird competed in the Women’s 400m, while Harris ran in the 100m event.
George’s time of 20.88 seconds saw him place fourth in his heat. The heat was won by Adam Gemili of Great Britain, who ran a time of 20.17 seconds. George’s lifetime best is 20.59 seconds.
George is currently on a four-month US training stint, which earned him qualification for the World Championship. He is a Police Officer, and competes with Police Progressive Youth Club on the local scene.
Coach of the Guyana team at the Championship Shaun Deitz said on social media that “George … looked so good right up to the race, but I don’t know what happened.”
This is the first time on the international scene that George ran the 200m as his pet event is the 400m.
