Turfites get ready; your appetites were whetted last Sunday with the Digicel Horse Race Classic now it is time for the main course, the Guyana Cup.
The nation’s largest horse race meet organized by Jumbo Jet Auto Sales returns to the Port Mourant Turf Club (PMTC)next Sunday for its seventh running and will see in excess of $30M in stakes and prizes being awarded to stable owners.
The annual Guyana Cup has been one of country’s traditions over the years and this meet being deemed the ‘biggest’ event in seven years.
In last year’s Guyana Cup, the winner (Elle’s Vision from the Jagdeo Stables) in the feature event received $3M but this year’s winner will cart off $3.5M.
There will also be three more million dollar races on the nine-race card, the Three Year- Old Guyana and West Indian Bred ($2.5M first prize) the Two Year-Old Open ($1.5M first prize) and the E and Lower ($1M first prize).
Other races for next Sunday’s meet include the G3 and Lower ($800,000), H and Lower ($400,000), Three Year-Old Guyana Bred ($600,000), I and Lower (300,000) and the G and Lower ($200,000).
International jockeys will be coming in Barbados, Jamaica, Canada and other countries to participate in the meet and more horses are expected to compete in the meet this year.
According to Secretary of the PMTC, Chattergoon Ramnauth, he expects to see “90 to 100 horses competing in Sunday’s meet”.
