Remembering 1823

A remembrance walk was held today from Le Ressouvenir on the East Coast to Parade Ground, Georgetown to commemorate the 1823 uprising of slaves and to press the case for a commemoration monument to be constructed on Parade Ground.

Mavado fails to take the stage

Jamaican dancehall singer Mavado last night refused to take the stage at the Slingerz Summer Jam held at the National Stadium, Providence because of myriad problems including being transported to Guyana on a tiny plane that saw him getting wet by rain.

The Skeldon factory was relatively quiet last Thursday because grinding has yet to start at the US$200 million factory.

Extra Skeldon factory work to cost US$30M

At approximately US$30 million, the South African firm Bosch Engineering is finalising work on six tasks at the problem-plagued Skeldon Factory and taxpayers will have to foot the bill after the Chinese firm originally contracted signed off with myriad issues still unresolved.

Total domination!

It’s official. Guyana squash teams again rule Caribbean squash. Not content with sweeping the team titles at the 31st Junior Caribbean Squash Championships last month in Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana’s squash seniors made a clean sweep of the team titles when the Digicel-sponsored Powerade and Smalta senior Caribbean championships concluded yesterday at the Georgetown Club.

A revealing turmoil

In a column in this space in mid-January 2012, in the aftermath of the general election, I wrote the following: “The playing out of this scenario, in very public view, of a President sitting in a Parliament, where his party is outnumbered by the coalesced opposition, is going to mean that the normal ruling party dictates will not be operating in Guyana, and  this manoeuvering for consensus, by its very nature, is going to require exemplary people, people of character, for the governing apparatus to work.
