Renanthera orchids are native to eastern Asia, south China and the Pacific Islands. There are approximately 15 species in this genus. Some species have been cross bred forming new Renanthera hybrids which are more com-pact and floriferous.
Renanthera orchids have adapted well to the Caribbean and Guyana. Most species grow in warn and sunny locations. Renanthera have long stalks with leathery leaves on either side, growing upwards. They are prized for their bright reddish/orange flowers on large branched sprays.
They can be grown on a wallaba post or a tree trunk.
Water orchids frequently during the dry season and make sure their roots get a good drink of water. Fertilize with Miracle Gro Bloom Booster once per week during the blooming season and Miracle Gro All Purpose during the rest period. Renanthera imschootiana is the species that grows well in Guyana.
Until next week, happy gardening!
