The Coalition for the 1823 Parade Ground Monument is hosting a Remembrance Walk/Freedom Walk in honour of the 1823 martyrs today.
According to a press release from the Coalition the walk is planned from Le Ressouvenir, East Coast Demerara to the Parade Ground, Georgetown.
“Le Ressouvenir is the location where the fight for freedom started and the Parade Ground is the location where the revolutionaries were brutally executed following mock trials,” the press release said, going on to state that the 18th August was chosen as the day for the walk because the revolution in 1823 started on that date.
The Coalition has invited people to participate in the walk in memory of the rebels’ heroic sacrifice and to sensitise the public about the rising in 1823. It also seeks to publicise its intention to build the 1823 Monument at the Parade Ground and to insist that those in authority respect the rights of all ethno-cultural groups in Guyana.
The route for the walk, which starts at 6am from Demerara Bank, Le Ressouvenir, will proceed west along the East Coast Highway to Ben Profitt Drive; left onto Ben Profitt Drive to the railway embankment; west along the railway embankment to the junction of Sheriff and David streets; west along David Street, Kitty to Lamaha Street, Kitty; left into Lamaha Street to Station Street, Kitty; right into Station Street to Vlissengen Road; left into Vlissengen Road to Lamaha Street; right into Lamaha Street to Waterloo Street then left into Waterloo Street to the Parade Ground.
The public is invited to join the procession at any point along the route, as are cyclists and motorists. A short rally will be held at Parade Ground at the conclusion of the walk, the release said.
