KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC Another dominating knock by Andre Russell and a telling spell of bowling by veteran off spinner Muttiah Muralitharan ensured Jamaica Tallawahs completed a six wicket win over Barbados Tridents as the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) continued with match 19 at the Sabina Park here yesterday. Russell struck 27 undefeated from 17 balls with two fours and two sixes at a crucial part of Jamaica’s reply. Man of the Match Muralitharan had earlier gathered three for 12 off four overs to restrict the Tridents to 113 for four off their 20 overs.
Tallawahs replied tentatively reaching 57 for three after 10 overs. Chris Gayle was bowled by Shoaib Malik for 5, Ahmed Shehzad who struck four fours and one six was bowled by Shakib Al-Hasan for 28 attempting an expansive drive and Danza Hyatt was run out for eight.
When Chadwick Walton went run out for 15 from a Dwayne Smith direct hit Tallawahs were under pressure on 65 for four. Russell joined Jermaine Blackwood and the pair added an unbeaten 49 for the fifth wicket. Blackwood’s contribution was 21 off 30 deliveries. Tridents were sent in by the Tallawahs and struggled to 113 for four off 20 overs. Dwayne Smith batted through the entire innings and hit four fours and one six to remain 52 not out off 53 balls. He put on 33 for the first wicket with Raymon Reifer. The aggressive Reifer was deceived by Nikita Miller and was bowled for 22 off 24 balls with four boundaries and one six.
The other main scores came from Ashley Nurse 15, and Shoaib Malik 14, who were both bowled by Muralitharan. The Sri Lankan also accounted for the Tridents captain Kieron Pollard who was snapped up by Chris Gayle at first slip for a duck trying to work a ball through the on side. The defeat was the third straight for the Tridents who started off the League with four successive wins. They finished the preliminary stage with eight points. Guyana Amazon Warriors also sit on eight points from six games and the Tallawahs eased into the semis with eight points from six matches, and are placed third in the League table.
