The Guyana Police Force and Police Wives Association in a simple ceremony two Thursdays ago closed another annual youth camp held at the Aurora Secondary School, Pomona, Essequibo Coast.
Under the theme “Youth Leading Our Nation”, the camp in its 22nd year had the largest participation to date, a total of one hundred and seventy six children, mainly from the coastal regions.
For the six-day camp from August 4 to 9, the children enthusiastically participated in a number of activities, including making beautifully created craft items which were on display. They also benefited from talks by health officials and a safety presentation by fire-fighters.
Assistant Commissioner Carol Lewis-Primo, the “camp mother” related that the camp had a few challenges, one boy who went to the camp with flu was sent home after his illness got worst. A few other children at the camp complained of pains in the joints or other minor complaints, and were sent to the Suddie Hospital to get medical attention.
Police Commissioner (ag) Leroy Brumell said that he was impressed by what he saw, urging the participants to maintain what they have learnt and to take it back to their homes and communities. Urging the little ones not to have a criminal record at a young age, the commissioner advised, “Think sensibly, always place emphasis on your studies and education and work to make your parents proud.”
Grace Brumell, President of the Police Wives’ Association in brief remarks to the gathering, commended the care givers for the role they played in assisting with the children. She thanked the Police Force for supporting the event, singling out Dale Alves, Commander of G Division for the time and patience he invested the camp.
