I wish to congratulate the Opposition Leader David Granger, the PNCR and APNU for the principled and responsible position they took on the Amaila Hydro Project. I believe the Guyanese people will continue to be proud of the APNU and the PNCR Leader for demonstrating sober leadership, which continues to put the Guyanese people first. It is important that such a highly controversial project, which was foisted on the Guyanese people by then president Bharrat Jagdeo must be fully examined to ascertain its value and the economic burden on the people. Like any responsible political party worth its salt, the PNCR has repeatedly called for a feasibility study of this project to determine its long-term value to the people.
The response given by the Jagdeo administration was nothing short of disrespectful.
It is unfortunate that the same kind of attitude prevails, despite the fact the parliamentary reality is starkly different.
It is therefore important that the APNU and people-centred political parties like the PNCR take a firm stand against the arrogance of the PPP/C government and represent the interest of the Guyanese people.
Guyanese politics cannot be about choosing which issues the politician or political parties like or think they must oppose or support. It must be about skilfully and fearlessly addressing those issues which are critical to total well-being of the people and improving the local economy.
It is no secret that it was Burnham and the PNC government which first began work on hydro-electricity in Guyana, hence it must be noted that opposition to this project by the PNCR is done with careful analysis and not simply for the purpose of objecting.
Again I salute the APNU and the PNCR for taking a firm stance for the people of Guyana and trust that they will continue to bring sensible and responsible leadership to the nation.
