Guyanese cyclists, Bruce Camacho and Aubrey Gordon secured podium finishes at the recently concluded World Masters Games which was staged in Turin, Italy.
Camacho, who now resides in Canada, rode away with the gold medal in the 65-plus Criterium and silver in the 65+ road race while the USA-based Gordon, the defending champion, copped the bronze in the 55-plus Criterium.
When Gordon took his talents to the open road however, he was not as fortunate as he suffered a crash in the road event.
Another local cyclist, Cecil Bernard, also participated but he failed to make the podium.
For this eighth World Masters Games, the Guyana Cycling Association of North America (GCANA) made a monetary contribution to the cyclists to assist them during their stay in Italy.
Before Gordon competed in the World Master’s, part of his preparation included two sojourns to the Land of Many Waters to take advantage of the warm weather and also to take part in the Three-Stage Road Race in May.
The World Masters Games is the signature sporting event for sportsmen and women over the age of 30 and involves a number of participants four times higher than a summer edition of the Olympic Games.
It is not a competition between nations but between athletes although it is possible to form teams with athletes of different nationalities.
