Guyana’s Sachia Vickery has earned a wild card to play in this year’s US Open lawn tennis tournament following her win USTA Girls 18 triumph on Stadium Court, Barnes Centre, San Diego recently.
Vickery, last week defeated Allie Kiick in three sets to win the girls 18 and under title at the San Diego tournament.
The win has earned the teenage a wild card to play in this month’s US Open tournament.
“It feels unbelievable. It hasn’t sunken in that I’m going to be playing at the U.S. Open,” the 17-year-old Miramar, Florida resident Vickery said following her victory.
“It’s been my dream since I started playing tennis. I can’t even put it into words how happy I am,” she added.
Not only Vickery and her parents Paula Liverpool and Rawle Vickery were happy, so too was the residents of Miramar, Florida where Vickery resides.
Vice Mayor Alexandra Davis of Miramar, Florida was so delighted with the win that she issued a City Proclamation declaring August 14, 2013 as “Sachia Vickery Day” at the Miramar Youth Enrichment Center located at 7000 Miramar Parkway.
“Sachia’s accomplishments are reflective of the great athleticism contained in our City. Just as Geno Smith has made his mark in football I see Sachia doing the same in the world of tennis,” said Davis.
Vickery then received a proclamation from Davis on behalf of the City of Miramar for her athletic achievements.
Vickery, who had defeated Kiick, the tournament’s number two seed 4-6, 6-2, 6-0, the teamed up with Kiick to win the girls’ 18s doubles title defeating top seeds and 2012 US Open girls’ doubles champions Taylor Townsend and Gabby Andrews.
That win earned Vickery and Kiick a spot in the US Open women’s doubles main draw.
Vickery is currently ranked at number 230 in the World’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings and has been ranked as high as No. 6 in the International Tennis Association (ITF) World Junior Rankings.
Kiick had beaten fourth-seed Taylor Townsend of Boca Raton, 1-6, 6-4, and 6-1 in the semi-finals while Vickery, the tournament’s top seed, overpowered sixth-seeded Brooke Austin of Indianapolis 6-1, 6-3.
