What his lawyer called “a strong alibi” was not enough to get bail for the accused in a break-in and larceny yesterday, after a court heard that police were investigating him for similar offences.
Patrick Smith, 33, of Lot 1 Dennis Street, Sophia, was remanded to prison by Magistrate Fabayo Azore when he appeared before her on breaking and entering and larceny charges at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Smith, who pleaded not guilty to the charges, is alleged to have broken into the home of Rudolph Richardson between May 30 and June 2, at South Ruimveldt, and stolen a generator, a microwave and toaster, among other items, which amounted to $375,000.
Attorney Paul Fung-A-Fat stated that Smith produced an airline ticket which showed that he had travelled to the North West but was nevertheless locked up for the previous four days.
He stated that Smith has a strong alibi, since at the time of the incident he was not in Georgetown.
However, his application for reasonable bail was denied after police prosecutor Ramsahoye Rambajue objected and informed the court that the police are currently investigating Smith pertaining to similar matters. The case was adjourned until September 9.
