Plumber Matthew Adams, who was found with a utensil used to crush cannabis when he was arrested and taken to the Brickdam Police Station, will be spending the next year in jail.
Adams, 30, was also fined $5,000 by Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday after he pleaded guilty to the crime. The charge was instituted after Adams was found with the utensil in his possession on August 16 at Brickdam Police Station.
Prosecutor Ramsahoye Rambajue stated that when Adams was arrested by the police and taken to the police station for another matter, he was searched by officers and the utensil discovered in his left pants pocket. He was subsequently informed of the discovery and charged.
Adams claimed that he found the utensil at the scene of a robbery. “Your Honour, when I see it, I didn’t know what it was. So, I just picked it up and put it in my pocket,” he told the court.
Meanwhile, a businessman was also arraigned at the court on the same charge.
Wishart Adams, 39, of 120 Farm Drive, South Ruimveldt Gardens, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Attorney Adrian Thomas, who appeared for Adams, a motorcycle spare parts vendor, told the court that it will be a very hard case for the police to prove. He made an application for reasonable bail to be granted and bail was set at $65,000 and the case was adjourned until September 11.
