Guyanese players suffered mixed fortunes on the official opening day of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Wilson Junior Open at the Grass Roots Tennis Center in St Vincent and the Grenadines on Monday.
Keshon Reece, the only Guyanese to qualify in the boys 14 years and under main draw, was comprehensively beaten by Jean-Philippe Murray of St. Lucia in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. Murray will tackle top seed Ukpioronfo Kolo of Grenada in the semi-final.
Meanwhile, 12-year-old junior sensation, Afruica Gentle powered her way past home girl Gabrielle Benn with a resounding 6-2, 6-0 thumping in the girls’ 14 years and under quarter-finals. Gentle is down to battle top seed Kamara Williams of St Vincent.
In the boys’ 18 years and under category, Guyana’s lone representative Gavin Lewis was easily disposed of by Trinidadian Nabeel Majeed Mohameed in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 on Friday.
Nichola Ramdyhan will try to keep Guyana’s flag flying when she opens her account in the girls’ 18 years and under main draw today.
