President of the Albion Cricket Club Lloyd Kanden on Monday challenged participants to make full use of the 2013 academy so that Albion will continue to be the breadbasket of Berbice and Guyana’s cricket.
The 13th annual academy, which got underway at the Albion Community Centre Ground in Berbice on Monday, is expected to last for one week.
The week long clinic, which has attracted approximately 60 students,
features lectures in the morning sessions on discipline, the cricketer as a role model and as an ambassador, etiquette and social grace, fitness, laws of the game, education, leadership, HIV & Aids and the history of cricket.
The afternoon sessions will focus on the basics of batting, bowling and fielding.
Former Headmaster and first class umpire Dhieranidranauth Somwaru, former Guyana team manager, Carl Moore, Berbice Cricket Board (BCB), Secretary Angela Haniff,, Human Resources Manager of Guysuco’s Albion/Port Mourant Estate, Vemen Walter, Albion’s Cricket Development Committee Officer, Muthuswammi Permual and Chief coordinator of the academy, Orvin Mangru are the lecturers.
National cricket coach Andre Percival, ex West Indies batsman, Sewnarine Chattergoon and current national cricketers Jonathan Foo and Anthony Bramble, are expected to assist with the clinic.
Republic Bank, Sterling Products, Universal DVD Club, D. Balram Shane General Store, Rite Choice Supermarket, Guysuco and Geddes Grant are sponsors of the academy which commences at 8am daily, concludes at 4.15pm and is open to young cricketers male and female between the ages of 10 and 19.
