A man was yesterday fined $10,000 and ordered to serve two months community service for narcotics possession.
It was alleged that Andave Thakur, 41, of Kalicharran Sand Road, Soesdyke on August 21 had 4.2 grammes of cannabis in his possession at Kurupukari, Essequibo River.
He pleaded guilty to the charge.
Prosecutor Ramsahoye Rambajue stated that on August 21, police ranks went to Thakur’s shop at Kurupukari and conducted a search and the cannabis was found in the pocket of a pair of pants where he was sitting. Rambajue said that Thakur told police that he uses the drug to smoke.
When asked by Magistrate Fabayo Azore whether he agreed with the police statement, Thakur said that he did.
Attorney Roysdale Forde, who represented Thakur, told the court that his client does not wish to waste the court’s time and added that Thakur is ashamed of what he did and wanted to be a role model for his five children.
Rambajue stated that there were no antecedents.
As a result, Magistrate Azore fined Thakur $10,000 and ordered him to serve two months community service at the Kurupukari Police Station.
