For 16-year-old Tabatinga, Lethem resident Mary Parker, securing 10 subjects at this year’s Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate examinations made her the top performing student for Region Nine this year.
Parker, a student of the St Ignatius Secondary, said that the distinction was never in her thoughts.
She secured six grade 1 passes, a grade 2 pass and three grade 3 passes. During a telephone interview with Stabroek News, the soft-spoken girl said she did not expect to do so well at the examinations even though they were not hard. She added that when her head teacher called her and informed her about her performance, she broke down in tears because she did not expect to do so well.
Parker said that preparation for the exams required her to have a study timetable and less leisure time. She attributed her success to her teachers, family and friends, but noted that she could have done better if she had studied harder.
For now, Parker is planning a career in the medical field and will be attending sixth form at a school in the city from September.
