Alpha United squeaked past the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) 1-0 as action in the Slingerz/National Association for Women Football (NAWF) Goal for Gold tournament continued yesterday.
Witnessed by a small gathering at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground, Bourda, the game was abandoned on Wednesday evening with five minutes left in regulation time and the scores untroubled at nil-all.
In a game that threatened often but hardly fulfilled, Marvin Joseph’s 115th minute header from within the six-yard area would be the difference between the two sides.
Latching onto a parried save by GDF keeper Delon Younge from an Andrew Murray Jr. cross from the left side of the 18-yard area, Joseph would place his header to the bottom left hand corner of the goal to book his side’s place in the final four. Triumphant coach Wayne Dover during a post-match comment stated “We never approach a game thinking the opponent is a walkover. Everyone has a fair chance of winning because its 11 versus 11, a flat pitch and one ball”.
“The army is one of the best teams in the country and kudos to them for a good showing. They are very capable of playing good football and if you are not organized and prepared they will come out on top”, added Dover.
In an invited comment, losing Coach Denzil Thompson said “We made a critical mistake and it cost us”.On Wednesday evening at the same venue, BK Western Tigers squeaked past bitter rivals Pele FC 4-3 on penalty kicks after regulation and extra time found the scores locked at nil-all.
