Youngsters at the East Coast Cricket Board (ECCB) 13th Annual Cricket Summer Camp yesterday benefited from sessions that focused on the importance of discipline and the various careers that can be pursued in the sport.
The session was facilitated by Ronald Williams, a former executive member of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB). He lectured on the importance of practising discipline and expounded on the importance of demonstrating obedience to management and coach and respect for the captain and teammates. Williams also spoke on the value of time management and exercising patience.
The highlight of the session was the discussion on the various careers involved in cricket. The cricketers learned that most commentators, coaches, managers, doctors, sports journalists, scorers, referees, umpires and curators, all had some experience in the middle as a player. Some of these careers are held by persons with a genuine love for the game and the desire to get involved in other aspects of its development outside of after a successful playing career or one that had been cut short by injury or illness.
Williams also advised the youngsters that there are always careers in cricket for those interested in the development of the players and the game. He urged the cricketers to commit themselves to the game and to practise discipline both on and off the field.
The camp concludes today at the Lusignan Community Centre Ground with a closing ceremony that will include presentations from members of the ECCB and other participants. Awards will also be presented to cricketers who gave stellar performances during the camp. The session starts at 9am.
