MEXICO CITY, Mexico, CMC- Trinidad and Tobago’s senior men’s volleyball team failed in their bid to reach the quarterfinal stage of the eight Pan American Cup at the Juan de la Barrera Gymnasium, Mexico City, Mexico.
The Calypso Spikers went down to Dominican Republic 3-0 in a winner-take-all final Pool B round-robin match for both teams on Wednesday night.
Despite their best efforts, the Trinidadians proved no match for the Spanish-speaking islands who coasted to victory 25-18, 25-13, 25-16 to end in third spot with a 1-2 record while T&T ended bottom of the group.
“Congratulations to Dominican Republic for this victory. They played very well and put some early pressure on us. They also showed good depth resting their captain and best player (Elvis Contreras and Jose Caceres),” said T and T’s captain Nolan Tash.
“On the other hand, we played a little better and will now await our next opponents with the hope of getting a win to avoid ending last in the tournament.”
In the other Pool B match, Mexico handed USA only its second loss in the history of the competition with a five-set victory, to top the pool with a 3-0 record and qualify to the semifinals automatically.
At the end of the Pan American Cup, the highest ranked participating team, not already qualified to the FIVB World League 2014, will qualify to the FIVB World League Qualification Tournament Challenge event.
