Alpha United defeated Camptown 3-0 as semifinal action in the Slingerz/National Association for Women Football (NAWF) Goal for Gold tournament began on Sunday.
Played at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground in Bourda, Alpha would break the deadlock on the stroke of half time through a Dwight Peters penalty kick.
Awarded the penalty following a rash challenge by Camptown custodian Oswald Cornette
on forward Manasseh Primo, Peters would send Cornette the wrong way as he drilled his right footed strike to the top left hand corner to conclude a gritty first half.
Alpha would double their lead four minutes upon the resumption of the second period following a poor goalkeeping decision by Cornette that allowed Anthony Abrams to score.
Cornette, who was positioned on the left side of the goal displayed poor positional judgment as he allowed the right footed strike from Abrams to run across his goal and nestle the ball into the bottom left hand corner.
Andrew Murray Jr. would complete the win for the country’s leading club side as he netted in the 93rd minute. Playing a neat one-two combination on the left side of the 18 yard area with Abrams, Murray would place his right footed strike to the back of the net after being saved with his first attempt by Cornette.
In a post match comment victorious coach Wayne Dover stated “Another day another win. Every game we approach with a mindset to win. We didn’t perform well in the entire game but those are one of the games we you have to grind out a result”.
“They made it difficult for us in the beginning. We analyzed what was going on and changed our formation. It brought some success but generally it was a lackluster performance. You have to give Camptown credit for their performance” added Dover.
In the earlier women’s semifinal match, Bartica trounced West Demerara by a 4-0 score line. Olivia Osiomo netted a first half double in the sixth and 30th minutes while Kerry Thomas and Candida Ambrose scored in the 51st and 58th minutes respectively.
Action in the semifinal round continues tomorrow at the same venue with Georgetown playing Berbice in the women’s section at 18:30hrs and BK Western Tigers opposing Slingerz FC at 20:30hrs.
