Wayne Cave played undefeated accumulating a spread of 382 to win the H. H Halim Generator ‘B’ Class Scrabble tournament ahead of Maurice Munro and Roberts Williams, Sunday last at the Malteenoes Sports Club, Thomas Land.
Cave won all six of his games against Kevin William, Robert Williams, Munro, Paul Adams,
Grace Hercules and Prudence Edwards. Munro, the runner-up player won five games while Robert Williams won three.
Veteran player, Cave, who was elated with his success in the tournament, had a best spread of 176 against Kevin Williams. His lowest spread was four when he matched up against Robert Williams.
Munro claimed the second place position with an overall spread of 192; losing one round to the tournament champion Cave, by nine points. Munro had a bye in the final round.
Robert Williams’ overall spread of 220 earned him third place in the tournament. In his set he had one bye in his first round. His highest spread was a total of 141 against Adams. In the process Williams lost games to Cave (-4) and Maurice Munro (-19).
Leon Belony, President of the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) said the tournament was successful despite the insignificant turnout. Belony said “…the tournament concluded successfully with top players going home with prize and others experience.
“It was slated to be a two tiered tournament for Beginners and B-Rank players but unfortunately no Beginner level players came out resulting in only B-rank players involved,” informed Belony.
Belony expressed gratitude to the sponsor of the tournament stating that he anticipates the continued support in the future.
