A bus conductor was remanded to prison yesterday on a charge that he tried to steal a woman’s shoulder bag.
Kelvin Washington, 33, of Lot 44 Princes Street, Lodge, who is facing a similar charge already in court, allegedly committed the offence on August 22 in Georgetown.
He pleaded not guilty when he appeared before Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
Police Prosecutor Seon Blackman told the court that Dawn Murray was walking on the street when she felt a hand in her bag.
She turned around and allegedly saw Washington pulling his hands out of her bag. She raised an alarm and a plain clothes police officer who was in the area at the time responded and arrested him.
Washington was later positively identified by Murray as the person she saw putting his hands in her bag, the prosecutor said, before objecting to bail on the grounds that Washington is not a first time offender and once bail is granted he may not return to stand trial.
As a result, bail was refused and he was remanded to prison until September 2.
