The Guyana Power and Light today said that the Demerara Interconnected System suffered a total shutdown yesterday during adverse weather conditions.
A statement from GPL said that at around 2.33 pm, one of two transmission lines linking Garden of Eden and Sophia “tripped on a transient ground fault”. This led to a total shutdown.
GPL said that the machines were quickly brought back on line and power restoration began at 2.49 pm. Full restoration was achieved at 3.39 when consumers on the East Coast came back on. The transmission line was returned to service at 5.50 pm.
