Nicholas Anthony Smith, the accused in the mugging of a man, was yesterday refused bail and remanded to prison.
It is alleged that on August 26, at Camp and Middle streets, in the company of another, Smith, a miner of 570 Mocha Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara robbed Jamal McDonald of personal articles amounting to $115,000.
He pleaded not guilty to robbery with violence when he was brought before Magistrate Faith McGusty, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
But Police Prosecutor Corporal Seon Blackman told the court that Smith confessed after he was arrested for the offence. According to Blackman, McDonald was walking along Camp Street when Smith approached him, and choked and cuffed him. McDonald was then relieved of his personal belongings. Smith was later arrested and charged and confessed while in custody, the prosecutor added.
As a result, bail was refused and Smith was remanded to prison until September 6.
