PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC-Trinidad and Tobago has been selected as the venue to contest the region’s premier One –day competition, the Regional Super 50 tournament in January next year, the Guardian has reported.
The competition, played alongside the Regional First Class series last year, will now be staged separately as a ‘Super Series’, the Guardian reported citing a source close to the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB).
The newspaper did not name the source but disclosed that the decision to stage the Regional Super 50 separately was based on the fact that the WICB was no longer hosting the regional T20 tournament.
It’s believed that the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB) has been able to secure sponsorship for the series swaying the WICB to send the tournament to T&T.
The TTCB is reported to be finalizing a deal with a government body to take care of the funding of the tournament and matches will be played at the Queen’s Park Oval.
The format of the tournament is still to be worked out but it is expected to be played in two groups with the winners and runners-up going into the semi-finals, leading to the Championship match.
Most of the regional stars are expected to be available for the series, since the tournament will be played at the end of the West Indies tour to New Zealand later this year and ending in the first week of January.
